NEW CASTLE — A former runner-up has taken the title at the 17th Annual Mickey Michalojko Memorial Scratch Bowling Tournament at Colonial Lanes.

After being runner-up two of the past three years, Bucky Buchanan, of Mercer County, captured the title by averaging 219 during the four qualifying games.

The event matched 100 of the best bowlers in four states. The bowlers competed for a prize of $2,000.

Runner up Sam DeWitt, of Pittsburgh, left a ringing 10-pin in the ninth frame that would have given him the lead. Danny Guerrieri, of Youngstown, Ohio, finished third and Jimmy Cheff, of Austintown, Ohio, finished fourth.

Pizza Joe’s sponsored the event. A special thanks to Joe Seminara and the Pizza Joe’s staff. Proceeds from the event and additional sponsorship monies raised will go towards the scholarship fund in Mickey Michalojko’s name. Organizers will distribute $1,850 in scholarship money this year to local area junior bowlers, bringing the total amount raised to more than $26,700.
