In the Dyess Friday Night Mixed League, 800 series were bowled by two bowlers for their very first time.
This is the article I wanted the late Mae Fraser to write, because I rolled one of those 800s. For those of you that did not know Mae Fraser, she wrote the Reporter-News’ bowling column before me.
I bowled games of 279, 249 and 277 for an 805 series. The other 800 series was an 814 bowled by my friend and ball driller, Paul Unruh.
At one point during my series, I delivered a ball that I knew was not going to strike. The whole center heard me yell, “Oh no, Shorty.” The 3 and 6 pins were the last to fall after being hit by a messenger, saving my 800 series.
In Paul’s series, the conversion of the 4-7-10 split saved his 800 series. I was not keeping track and I didn’t know I was close to an 800 series until I delivered my final ball and the recaps appeared on the monitors. I heard Margaret McMillan say, “Shorty, you have an 805.”
Because of a school function, I immediately departed the center to pick up my grandson. When I returned, Unruh walked up and congratulated me on my series. I thanked him and he said, “You got outscored by 9 pins, because I bowled an 814 series.”
I congratulated him on his accomplishment. We each had one open frame during our runs, a ten pin miss for Paul and a 4-9 split for me. Unruh and I joined the club of bowlers that have bowled an 800 series before the perfect game. The 300 game will remain on our bucket list.
Paul’s wife Lisa was present to celebrate with him. When Unruh and I compared notes, we discovered that after two games we were thinking 700 and not 800. This was a fun night for us. Paul has been bowling for a number of years and I am in my 41th year. It is true, good things come to those who wait.

BOWLING HIGHLIGHTS: A few years back, USBC eliminated the 11 IN A ROW award but we still have bowlers that roll 11 in a row. In the Dyess Family and Friends League, Cal Roady spared in the first frame and then took it of the sheet for a 11 in a row for a 290 game.
IN REMEMBRANCE OF: As I was finalizing this article on Thursday morning, I received word that Ron Beuoy passed away Wednesday night. Ron rolled the latest perfect game that I reported, and it was against my team. Beuoy and I had a very good relationship since the first time we bowled together. I am going to miss him. Please keep the family, especially wife Reese and daughter Reagan, in your prayers.
