Team Alberta bowlers, including three from Lethbridge, will be flying across the country to face off against 275 of the best bowlers in Canada at the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Bowling Championships in Prince Edward Island next Monday through Saturday.

“Our bowlers began their journey to the bowling championships after performing their best in Medicine Hat last summer at the provincial games,” said Jill Moore, Special Olympics Team Alberta Chef de Mission.

“Even before they received their acceptance letter for Team Alberta, our athletes were already hitting the lanes with their local program. Our bowlers love bowling and being able to represent Alberta is just icing on the cake.”

This will be the first time half of the athletes are competing on a national level even though most of the athletes have been bowling anywhere from two to 25 years.

“Our bowlers are representing 10 communities and want to make their hometowns proud. Each athlete knew they needed to be dedicated to their training because they are representing over 2,000 of our Alberta bowlers.”

Team Alberta’s bowlers range from 16-year-old Rylan Kersey from Medicine Hat to 62-year-old Fern Bremault from Calgary. Team Alberta bowlers are representing: Calgary, Chestermere, Didsbury, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Olds, Red Deer and Strathcona County.

Lethbridge bowlers participating include Lauren Bowyer, Carissa Burch and Ken Sawicki in the 10-pin event.

For the 5-pin bowlers, the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Bowling Championships is the top competition they will reach while 10-pin bowlers are able to advance to be part of Team Canada and to compete in the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.

Team Alberta will fly out from the Calgary International Airport and Edmonton International Airport on Monday and return May 20.
