Robert B. Allan, Sr., age 86, longtime resident of Reading and North Reading passed away on April 14 after a brief illness.

Born in Dedham, MA, Bob was the son of the late John and Jane Allan and beloved brother of the late Nancy Crooker and her husband William.

Mr. Allan was raised in Dedham and was a graduate of Dedham High School, Class of 1949. Bob was well known in Dedham as Ribby and was a standout softball player in town. After high school, Bob served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. Upon discharge he attended Northeastern University where he achieved high honors with a BS in Business Administration – Class of 1959.

Bob married Joan Axtman, the love of his life, on July 1, 1961. After a brief career at Western Union, Bob was hired by Avco / Textron in Wilmington where he would spend more than 30 years. Together Bob and Joan raised 3 children. He is survived by his wife, Joan, Bonnie Hughes and her husband Bill of Reading, John Allan and his wife, Joanne of North Reading and Robert Allan Jr. and his companion, Joanne of New Fairfield, CT. He is also survived by 6 loving grandchildren. Christopher Ventullo and his wife Olivia, Nicholas Ventullo, Scott & Brett Allan, Katie & Jessie Allan.

In his younger years, Bob played softball in the Avco softball league and was very active in the Avco 10 Pin Bowling League serving as secretary for most of his career. He was an avid horseshoe player who loved ping pong, billiards and his mid-life crisis speed boat. Bob enjoyed “camping” where his camper of choice grew larger every few years. After starting with a 17′ camper, Bob & Joan eventually settled into a 36′ park model in Birch Point Campground, Naples, ME. They spent 25+ years in Naples, but recently moved their summer home to SeaVu South in Wells, ME.

A gentle and kind man who never had a bad thing to say about anyone, Bob will be missed by all who knew him.

Friends and relatives are invited to gather at Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home on 25 Sanborn Street, (corner of Woburn St.) Reading, MA from 4-8 PM on Wednesday, April 18. Funeral service celebrating Bob’s life will be held at The Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill Street, North Reading,,Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 11 AM. Friends and family are invited to attend. Interment will be at the Charles Lawn Cemetery where Bob will be laid to rest next to “his friend Gordon”.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the Union Congregational Church 148 Haverhill St. North Reading MA 01864.
